Yet another time waster

OASIS has published a Proposed Charter for a new TC: OASIS Web Services Federation (WSFED) Technical Committee.

A number of people in the Liberty Alliance/SAML community have taken shots (Eve Maler has posted a summary) although Eve herself appears to be taking a hopeful approach. The Burton Group's Gerry Gebel has a balanced look, even though he quotes Yogi Berra: “It’s déjà vu all over again.”

I'd like to think of it as a way to get WS-Fed out from under Microsoft's thumb- or as a wedge to get MS to officially support SAML.

We don't need extensions to WS-fed. We don't need extensions to SAML, for that matter. What we need is a single standard, albeit in two flavors - light & heavy. We need to get this done, because commoditized federation is long overdue.
