Identity and the hot stove league

Reading Eric Norlin's review of identity at the Web 2.0 conference brings to mind a baseball analogy (appropriate for October, I might add): everyone wants to hit a home run and no one is willing to lay down a sacrifice to get a runner in scoring position. Most (probably all) of those companies will be screaming "wait until next meme!" when the WWW Series begins.
