A novel defenseRaymond Griffiths is alleged to have been the mastermind behind the 90's internet piracy ring called Drink or Die (DOD). Many of the participants in this ring have been tried, convicted and jailed. Mr. Griffiths, an Australian, fought extradition to the US and convinced a local court in Sydney to reject the petition for extradition. According to his lawyer, the grounds are that it would have been impossible for him to represent himself in the US.
While it might have been impossible for him to have his Aussie lawyer defend him in the US, defendants in criminal trials do have the option of a court appointed attorney for free.
Sounds like Mr. Griffiths wants a get out of jail free card simply because he's poor. A novel approach, for sure.
